Klondike Cabins has a rich, multifaceted history interwoven with the manufacturing history of Western North Carolina.
In the 1920s, two of North Carolina’s manufacturing families joined by marriage and built a few cabins on a thousand acres of land surrounding a small stream by the name of Grassy Creek. They used the cabins for vacationing and hunting, later as a working dairy farm, by the name of Klondike Farm, and finally as the official guest house for Chatham Manufacturing Company. As time passed, the cabins collected memories and memorabilia. Authentic Chatham blankets and taxidermy all acquired on property, each with a captivating story, and early 1900s guns line the walls. A unique, welcoming time capsule of storied history all wrapped in wooden beams and original horsehair lining.
After having lived in the cabins for a brief time when first moving to Elkin in 1992, Derrill and Lori couldn’t bear for the history to be lost, and so acquired the property in 2000 to preserve its rich past and turned it into a small rental property so that all could experience the beauty of the property. Wanting to ensure each guest's stay was as memorable as their own experience, they hired Bellhop to weave intention and storytelling into the guest journey.
We crafted a brand that honored their vision: to preserve a connection to the history, nature, and the company you’re joined by. The design aesthetic at Klondike Cabins embraces nostalgia to not only preserve the 1920s cabins, but to encourage connection and foster happiness. We used nostalgia to infuse curiosity into the guest experience, creating an invitation to explore the past and let go of technological barriers that keep us from being present. We created an amenity package that encouraged exploration. And a marketing strategy to reach all types of connections, from couples and groups of friends, to family reunions and wedding celebrations.
Today, a turn down Chatham Lodge Lane is a step back in time and away from civilization. A place to connect to history, nature, and each other, built on the belief that those connections are what replenish our souls.
